Panmunjom ax brutality case 판문점 도끼 만행사건
Panmunjom was originally not divided into the South and the North, so it did not work on guard duty.
It was a space where the South and the North could freely move in one space.
South and North Korea goverment are enemies each other, but for citizens, the North Korean military was no different from their friends in the neighborhood to them.
We even shared food and played sports together.
Until the ax atrocities happen.
On August 18, 1976, there was a cottonwood tree inside the JSA that blocked the view of the South Korean military. so the US and South Korean forces were working on pruning that tree. At the time, the North Korean troops at the scene led dozens of people to stop working, which the South Korea ignored.
Angry North Korean soldiers killed two U.S. officers at the scene with their axes.
This incident became so big that it was even reported to the president.
President Park Chung-hee, a former soldier at the time, insisted that North korea be punished.
Concerned about the recurrence of the war, the U.N. forces held out a bargaining chip, and eventually the incident did not escalate through a letter from the North's supreme commander.
The pruning eventually ended with helicopters, tanks, fighter jets, and soldiers mobilized.
The incident led to the establishment of the inter-Korean border at the JSA, which divided the regions separately between South and North Korea.
